Boasting the highest mountain in the Black Forest; Feldberg has 50 kilometres of pistes that are covered with thick snow during the ski season, from cross country and gentle slopes, to black runs for the most experienced of skiers. You'll enjoy snowy mountain peaks that are high above sea level, with the snow park providing kickers, rails, and boxes that are popular with snowboarders. In the summer months, you can take a lift to the top and see as far as the Swiss and Austrian Alps, before hiking down the trails, stopping at one of the wooden lodges for a drink.

Things to see

Skiing is the main attraction in Feldberg, with the season lasting around 100 days, and there are artificial snow makers for the rare times when the snowfall isn't thick enough. In addition to different difficulties of downhill skiing, there's also cross country, snowboarding areas, and several ski schools to help you improve your skills. Take the cable cars in the summer months and you'll enjoy the views of lush green forests, calm lakes, and over the sweeping mountain scenery, before hiking down at your own pace and stopping to smell colourful wildflowers. The top of the mountain is also home to many observatories and weather stations, and there's a rich history of this area being used during the cold war, as well as the Bismarck memorial which stands proudly over the mountain.

Where to stay

Feldberg is a small village in the shadow of the ski resort, and most people are attracted to the area because of its isolated atmosphere. There's a small selection of hotels in Feldberg that have all the facilities you need, as well as a few restaurants and cafés on the mountainside. Popular in the area are the traditional wooden huts that are conveniently placed along the skiing and hiking trails, with cosy restaurants and well stocked bars, as well as terraces where you can enjoy the view as you relax and catch your breath.

How to get to Feldberg

EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg is just an hour away by car, across the border with Switzerland, and there are a large number of flights landing here from across Europe and the Middle East. Take a bus to Basel's main railway station, and then hop on a train to Feldberg-Bärental, before picking up a local bus to Feldberg. Zurich Airport is also a popular arrival point, as it has excellent connections to other major European cities, and this is about a 90 minute drive to Feldberg, with rental cars or private shuttle services available.
