Fehmarn Hotels

Lapped by the waves of the Baltic Sea, just off mainland Germany, lies the island of Fehmarn. It's renowned for its enviably fine weather and rolling yellow meadows that seem to mirror the colour of the sun. As well as being a perfect getaway for those who love the rural sprawl and proximity of the beaches, nature lovers will also love the wildlife – it's a bird-watcher's paradise with hundreds of species to be seen. The island also has a place in rock history as the last place Jimi Hendrix played live, spawning the album Live at the Isle of Fehmarn.

Things to see

The unspoilt, rugged grandeur of Fehmarn is its biggest attraction. A refreshing contrast to more developed and artificially sculpted seaside destinations, the island still has the feel of a wilderness in places. The best kind of wilderness – one that's near beautiful sandy beaches. While you can happily spend the whole holiday lounging on the warm sand, this is also the perfect location to show off your windsurfing and kitesurfing skills. These are very popular activities on the island, so for the full Fehmarn experience you should try to get stuck in. More watery fun can be had at the FehMare pool complex, which is situated on a beach promenade and features rippling seawater swimming pools and soothing saunas. You can also practice your swing at Fehmarn Golf Course, and if you fancy a bit of sightseeing you should check out the St Nicholas Church – it's a real piece of history, with medieval decor within.

Hotels in Fehmarn

There are moments during your holiday here – like when you're wandering the rolling meadows, or exploring the rugged shores – that you may well feel like you've escaped the clutches of the modern world. That said, the hotels in Fehmarn have the contemporary comforts and conveniences that will ensure you'll want for nothing during your stay – whether you want to keep up to date with emails and social media with WiFi access, lie back on your bed and flick through satellite channels on flat-screen televisions, or unwind in an on-site sauna.

Where to stay

There are hotels in Fehmarn, of course, but there's no denying that there is a rather limited number to choose from. Booking well ahead of time should mean you'll have no problem securing guestrooms on the island itself, though. You could also opt to stay on the mainland. Grossenbrode is a resort area on the German coast, just across the water from the island of Fehmarn, and has its own powdery beach where you can relish the calm waters of the Baltic Sea on those long warm days of spring and summer.

How to get to Fehmarn

The most conveniently located gateway to the region is Luebeck Airport, although there is the snag of it only catering to a small selection of flights and destinations. It's far more likely that, if you're heading in from outside the country, you'll land at Hamburg, which caters to a wide variety of international airlines. Crossing over from the mainland to Fehmarn is easy thanks to the Fehmarn Sound Bridge, which with its striking steel arch is a modernist icon of the landscape.
