Christchurch Hotels

New Zealand’s third-largest city - and the South Island’s capital - Christchurch has a buzzing, cosmopolitan atmosphere to rival any world metropolis, but it is the friendly, community spirit which really sets it apart. It is a contrast of old-fashioned English tradition, with summer afternoons spent playing cricket or punting on the river, and Kiwi dynamism, which is evident in the creative and optimistic response to the city’s major earthquake. Christchurch may bear some scars, but its regeneration is magnificent.

Things to see

Christchurch city centre is an immediately attractive place, which demonstrates great strokes of creativity. Cathedral Square is one of the most iconic places – a cardboard cathedral, constructed by locals from salvaged materials, stands in the place of the original, which was destroyed in the earthquake. It’s testament to how this city has pulled together in crisis. Another extraordinary place is the Restart Mall, a collection of brightly-painted shipping containers housing shops whose premises were destroyed. Free WiFi throughout the mall and a plethora of cafés makes this a delightful place to socialise and shop in. For nature-lovers, the city’s botanic garden has a wealth of flora to enjoy, and throughout Christchurch’s history, it has represented growth and resilience. When you need to relax, take a punt on the river. Cushions and blankets allow you to drift down the river in utter comfort, taking in the picturesque views in every direction.

Hotels in Christchurch

Christchurch has a wide variety of hotels, from luxury spa resorts to budget accommodation and boutique guesthouses. In the large luxury hotels, you’ll be treated to a full range of spa services, as well as having plenty of other facilities, from nightclubs to restaurants. Rooms range from spacious suites to luxury apartments and come with flat-screen TVs, WiFi and room service. The city’s independent boutique hotels are perfect for a romantic getaway, with chic, classically-designed rooms. Discount hotels in Christchurch include self-catering apartments and local motels. Rooms are comfortable, modern and include amenities such as fridges and coffee makers.

Where to stay

Central Christchurch is ideal for a convenient city break – you’ll be close to all the main sights, as well as the parks and river. There’s a superb restaurant and café scene too. Hotels here tend to be mid-range and luxury, with a choice of traditional hotels and self-catering apartments on offer. If you’re looking for a budget hotel, try north Christchurch, where a choice of motels is available. The city centre is close enough to walk to, or a quick bus journey away. For a more tranquil location, try the western district of Riccarton, where some boutique guesthouses are located.

How to get to Christchurch

Christchurch International Airport is located just 8 kilometres from the city centre, making transfers quick and hassle-free. The airport receives flights from some Australian and Asian cities, as well as from all over New Zealand, so there are many available connections. From the airport, both public buses and door-to-door airport shuttle services are available – the journey takes around 15 minutes. Alternatively you can take a taxi or hire a car. Once in Christchurch bicycles are a popular way to tour the city, and rental bikes are in plentiful supply. A comprehensive bus network also makes it easy to get around.
