Kas Hotels

Once a small, traditional fishing village, Kas may have grown over the years but it hasn’t lost any of its charm or character. Picture fishermen hauling in their daily morning catch into the bustling harbour, locals sitting back under shady trees chattering and tourists pottering around exploring little shops and stopping for an ice-cold refreshment in a pavement café and you get the picture. Pebble beaches with their rock shelves welcome sunbathers and the sea plays host to scuba divers searching for colourful corals and darting fish.

Things to see

The beaches in Kas itself are relatively small, but despite their petite size and pretty pebbles are ideal for sunbathing thanks to the rocky shelves that jut out over the sea. If it's golden sand you're after though, you don't have to travel too far. Unspoilt, and underdeveloped, Patara Beach boasts over 18 kilometres of soft sands that are ideal for sprawling on and its shallow waters are perfect for paddling in. You may also spot turtles here as its one of the places they go to lay their eggs. If you're heading out this way, don't miss the Patara Ruins. You can explore what's left of century old bath houses, clamber over fallen Porphyry columns and marvel at the Roman amphitheatre which once seated over 10,000 and now lies almost buried under huge sand dunes. Back in Kas, there's little better than ambling its winding back alleys and watching boats bob in the harbour while you enjoy succulent prawns smothered in sizzling garlic oil and crusty home-baked bread.

Hotels in Kas

Many of the hotels in Kas are located near the coast, and offer beautiful views of the shimmering sea. Whatever your budget, you should be able to find accommodation that comes with a pool, so you can cool off during the scorching midday sun. Most hotels offer a good range of convenient, modern amenities with televisions in guestrooms, WiFi and that all important air conditioning. Self-catering apartments and condos are ideal for those travelling in groups – and you'll have access to your own fully equipped kitchens and usually private outside space.

Where to stay

For a laid back break staying in Kas itself won't disappoint. Here the pace of life is slow and days can be spent bathing on its pebble beaches, pottering around pretty alleys and savouring Turkish cuisine in traditional tavernas while gazing out to sea. If you're on a budget, hotels away from the coast offer better value for money, while if you'd prefer to be closer to golden beaches and craggy Roman ruins, yet still have access to Kas, a stay in Patara is a good choice.

How to get to Kas

Kas doesn't attract huge hordes of package holidaymakers which is a big part of its appeal. Much of the reason for this is its location; around 190 kilometres from both Dalaman Airport and Antalya Airport, it's not the easiest place to get to, but it's definitely worth the effort. Taxis can get you to your Kas hotel, but a cheaper option is to hire a car – which will also come in handy for exploring the whole area while on holiday here. An even cheaper option is to fly to Istanbul and take a direct overnight bus to Kas from Turkey's capital.
