Alicante Hotels

A thriving hub of glittering Madrileños culture and history, the small port of Alicante has a lot to offer. In the center of town, you’re always only a short stroll from the citrus scented markets, museums, and galleries filled with Picasso originals. The tumbling golden beaches are steps from the best bars and hotels meaning Alicante embodies the elegance of Madrid with the sun-soaked relaxation time you want from a beach break.

Things to see

Plentiful sunshine is one of the great attractions to Alicante and, if you’re after some time at the beach you can do no better than Playa del Postiguet. This golden beach weaves its way around the white and terracotta buildings and out into the sparkling Mediterranean. It has areas for sports and kids as well as peaceful caverns away from the crowds. San Juan Beach, a few kilometers out of town by tram, is where the locals flock in the summer and it’s a compact playground of immaculate harbors and white-gold sands, lined with family-run shops and restaurants serving some of the freshest paella in Valencia. A piece of European history dominates the Alicante skyline; atop the Mount Benacanti, the Castillo de Santa Barbara still looks the part and is full of battlements, amusements, and glorious views of Mediterranean and local sun-soaked terracotta towns. As you descend from the castle stop in at the Central Market, built between 1911-12, the building holds strong Modernist influences. Taste the fresh produce, peruse the art works, or simply cool down with a fresh juice away from the midday sun.

Hotels in Alicante

As you might expect in from a bustling costal city, Alicante’s hotel scene offers every possible luxury. If you want 5 star services and an exquisite location, opt for a hotel as close to the Esplanade and beaches as possible. Upmarket hotels offer spas, private pools, and access to the best beaches, as well conference centers and office suites for business travelers. Many of the hotels in Alicante are influenced by the Spanish Modernist movement and the quirky architecture is certainly an admirable addition to any stay. The budget options will see you receive a hearty Spanish welcome, with clean, sun-filled rooms, and WiFi included.

Where to stay

Just beyond the port is one of the most exquisite promenades in Spain, paved with over 6 million wave shaped tiles the Esplanada de España is a tree-lined marble paradise, particularly lovely as you stroll along it before dinner. A stay here would have you steps from the beach and within walking distance of the castle. If your trip is more focused on sights than sand, then a base in the city center is ideal, you’ll be closer to the markets and galleries, and the on-street cafés are the perfect place to sit in the shade and people watch.

How to get to Alicante

For international flights, Alicante Airport has hundreds of flights daily to and from worldwide locations. Airport transfers are quick, cheap, and frequent and many hotels will be able to procure you a deal at short notice. If you’re staying in Spain already there is a direct train from Madrid which takes just under 4 hours, the views of the Spanish countryside are not to be missed. Many cruise ships also pass through Alicante on a weekly basis, and you can see much of the city on a whistle-stop tour if you’re only staying one night.
