Messina Introduction

Messina is a thriving port city that has been a gateway to the Mediterranean Sea since ancient times. Messina suffered severe devastation during bombing raids in World War II, but there are still beautiful buildings, churches and museums to be found as you wander the broad streets. Hot summer days here are perfect for indulging in an icy coffee granita with cream as you dip your fingers in bubbling fountains or meander under shady trees in lush, colourful public gardens.

Hotels in Messina

The coastal Sicilian city of Messina has an abundance of rental homes and apartments, bed-and-breakfasts and 3-star to 4 star hotels. Luxury hotels in Messina will offer large rooms with stunning panoramic views of the city, hearty buffet breakfasts, fitness centres, free parking and WiFi. Mid-range hotels provide spacious rooms with elegant furnishings, air conditioning, minibars and a generous buffet breakfast. Apartments often give gorgeous views of the beaches of Messina, with sun-drenched balconies where you can sip your morning coffee, while rental homes and bed-and-breakfasts offer sea views or city views, plus an Italian-style breakfast.

Where to stay

Since Messina is a coastal city on the island of Sicily, the waterfront is where you'll find nearly every hotel, bed-and-breakfast, rental home and apartment. Luxury hotels in Messina are set right on the coast, close to the ferry terminals and the centre of town. These properties are known for their opulent furnishings, large outdoor pools, private white sand beaches and extensive gardens, where you can relax. Discount hotels in Messina are also set along the coastline, but they're further away from the city centre. Here you'll be served croissants and cappuccino in the morning in air-conditioned rooms.

Things to see

The towering Messina Cathedral was completed in 1551 and has been faithfully restored after severe damage during World War II. Piazza del Duomo is a great spot for people-watching and finding your bearings after disembarking from the ferry. You can take a seat near the ornately carved Fontana di Orione as you decide which direction to explore first. You may head straight for the Messina Bell Tower where you can step inside and watch the incredible arrangement of gears, weights and counterweights working together to ensure the astronomical clock keeps perfect time. Also close by is the Regional Museum of Messina, with its pretty courtyard and extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and important archaeological finds. An exceptional example of Norman architecture can be found in the small but impressive Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani. Don't miss the strange but gorgeous Camposanto, a cemetery so stunning that it is more like a park.

How to get to Messina

Perched on the north-east corner of Sicily, Messina can be reached by all sorts of adventurous routes. International visitors usually arrive in Italy by plane, landing in Rome or Naples before taking an overnight train and a ferry to Messina. Busses to Messina run regularly from Catania, Palermo, Taormina and Rome, or you can rent a car and drive to Messina. No matter which overland route you take, they'll all end up at a ferry terminal for you to ride the ferry to Messina. If you aren't driving, you can take a hydrofoil instead of a ferry.
