Gateshead Hotels

Gateshead is a large metropolitan city set against the vast shimmering waters of the River Tyne. Gateshead boasts an extraordinary display of architectural marvels, ranging from redbrick Victorian towers to sleek mirror-like domes and bridges. This bustling town is also home to the MetroCentre – one of the largest shopping and leisure centres in the UK - where bargain hunters can rifle through the seemingly endless designer stores and food-lovers can indulge at the dozens of eclectic restaurants.

Things to see

Begin your Gateshead morning by taking a tour of its many outstanding architectural sights. First, visit Saltwell Towers, a large Victorian mansion capped with miniature turrets and battlements. Saltwell Towers is situated in an enormous 55 acre green space that’s open the public, where old stone bridges arch over glistening streams, and tree-lined footpaths lead past crystalline lakes and well-maintained, flower-rich gardens. After, amble along to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, a futuristic silver tilting bridge that gracefully bends over the Tyne waters. Walk across the sleek structure at night, and see the bridge illuminated in a rainbow of colour. A short walk away from the bridge is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, a huge gallery space - situated in a 1930s flour mill - that showcases inspirational and offbeat artworks. Finish off your Gateshead day with a trip to the sprawling MetroCentre, splurging at the top-class designer boutiques.

Hotels in Gateshead

Treat yourself to a stellar stay at one of Gateshead’s many modern 4-star hotels, where attentive service, large rooms with glitzy interiors, and refined red-velveted bar lounges are in abundance. For a more affordable stay, with all the benefits of modern accommodation - including WiFi, room service, and even indoor pools - stay at one of the many stylish 3-star Gateshead hotels. If you’re looking for more traditional accommodation, then the green-washed countryside south of Gateshead is speckled with dozens of surprisingly affordable old-world B&Bs, guesthouses, and lodges set in large thatched cottages.

Where to stay

To be in the heart of Gateshead’s bustling city-style energy, stay in the centre, just south of the Tyne bridge. This puts you within easy access of the town’s architectural attractions, yet it also means that you’re beside the buzzing niche boutiques of the High Street, the friendly fire-lit traditional taverns and - if you’re seeking neon-washed nightlife - the bouncing clubs. For a holiday immersed in daytime culture and night-time energy, stay across the Tyne bridge, in the south side of Newcastle. If you want tranquil natural surroundings with easy town access, stay beside the many forests to Gateshead’s west.

How to get to Gateshead

As a dynamic metropolitan area just south of Newcastle, Gateshead is easily accessed by rail or by car. Gateshead is situated on a metro line, with Gateshead Interchange and Gateshead Stadium being the two most central metro stops. The metro races along to Newcastle Central Station, and from there, direct trains trundle throughout the country, including London, Liverpool and Birmingham. If arriving by car, the A1(M) - which links London with Edinburgh - passes right through central Gateshead. Once in the town, public transport - such as affordable buses and the metro - will whizz you through the streets, and to and from central Newcastle.
