Find out more about Tirana

Tirana Hotels

Chaotic, hectic, crazy – just some of the words regularly used to describe Tirana, and all true, but mostly this burgeoning city is a bustling, vibrant, colourful place. It provides real insight into modern-day Albania – a focus of east meets west where relics of Communism stand beside gleaming glass towers and old-style markets hold back the influx of boutique stores. Wander along lively streets full of snack vendors, buzzing bars and tooting traffic, taking in the intoxicating whirlwind that is Tirana.

Things to see

Start off at Skanderbeg Square – Tirana’s main plaza. Stroll along clean pedestrian pavements, past locals nattering in the sun, towards Skanderbeg Monument for a look at the large man-on-horse replica of one of Albania’s national heroes, before heading to Et’hem Bey Mosque. As one of Tirana’s oldest remaining buildings – constructed between 1789 and 1823 – it’s well worth taking a look inside at the intricately painted friezes and decorations. Don’t miss the nearby National History Museum – home to Albania’s largest collection of historical treasures including a replica of Skanderbeg’s sword. The front of the museum’s adorned with a Communist-type mosaic of patriotic Albanians. Once all the sightseeing gets too much, head to a local eatery for some yummy Albanian delicacies – try a satisfyingly greasy byrek, or pastry filled with cheese and spinach. Other popular street foods include the obligatory doner kebab and sufflaqe - an Albanian take on Greek souvlaki.

Hotels in Tirana

Tirana’s the perfect place to enjoy super swanky, gleaming modern hotels in all their glory. The city is brimming with 4 and 5-star newly built upmarket hotels, providing sparkling interiors with marble surfaces, stunning floor to ceiling mirrors and glistening chandeliers. If all that glitz isn’t quite for you, check in to a boutique guesthouse where you’ll find understated modernism – think clean lines, waterfall showers and neutral loft-style decor. Tirana’s luxury hotels don’t come with the price tag of other European capitals, but if you’re in need of a cheap hotel in Tirana, plenty of small B&Bs offer inexpensive room rates.

Where to stay

Tirana’s best discovered when explored by foot, so staying in the city centre is the best option for most visitors. Anywhere in Zone 1 – and close to Skanderbeg Square – makes it easy to stroll around the main sights. If you fancy partying with Tirana’s cool urbanites, head to Blloku – still very central and arguably the city’s trendiest area. Further out, Tirana’s suburban districts are mostly residential until you hit the wall of mountains to the east. If the city noise gets too much, Mount Datji’s a great retreat for walking, skiing or just breathing in some fresh air.

How to get to Tirana

Nënë Tereza International Airport serves airlines from major UK and European cities. The airport’s located 26 kilometres from Tirana at Rinas, so you’ll need to catch one of the regular inexpensive airport shuttle buses from outside the airport that stops at Tirana’s Skanderbeg Square. Grabbing a taxi is another option, though agree the price before you get in as most don’t have running meters. Once in Tirana you shouldn’t really need to worry about transportation, as everything in the city centre is within walking distance. Taxis dash around all over the city in case you do need to head further out.
