Siem Reap Hotels

This booming tourist town bustles with mopeds and the local 'tuk tuks' weaving along the streets, and is the gateway to the ancient, elegant yet rugged towers of the Angkor Wat temple, and archaeological site. Thanks to the large amounts of tourists that visit here, there's also plenty of buzzing street markets and modern amenities to be found. Angkor Wat isn't the only cultural site here though, and you'll find plenty to explore among the town's informative museums and markets.

Things to see

As well as the many enigmatic, ancient cultural sites, party animals should definitely pay a visit to 'pub street', so named for the large amount of bars and nightspots found here. Drinks are very cheap, and you'll no doubt bump into travelers and tourists from all over the world here, reveling in the electric nightlife, and balmy heat. The main attraction though, is of course the precise elegance of Angkor Wat and the surrounding archeological site. This sprawling, weathered stone temple city dates back to the 12th century, and is the largest religious monument in the world. After a leisurely stroll of discovery around the lush grounds and monument itself, you can hit the Angkor Night Market for fiery street foods and cultural wares.

In the higher end establishments you'll find car services, internet access, and restaurants, which generally serve a mix of international foods, and the local salty, spiced dishes. Discount hotels are also quite common, thanks to the large amounts of travelers and backpackers that pass through here, so you can find very affordable accommodation for couples, as well as larger, more lavish digs for a grand family holiday, which tend to come equipped with glittering pools, and public areas.

Where to stay

If Angkor Wat is where you plan to spend a lot of your time, then finding a hotel in the Thang district is recommended, as it's closest to the site. There's a good mix of higher end accommodation and boutique rooms available too, so whether you're after a romantic retreat or fact finding family holiday, you'll be catered for in this area. For those wanting to get into the thick of the action, the village area, has easy access to the main markets and shopping centers. For a more rural experience, you can stay in or near the cultural village.

How to get to Siem Reap

Siem Reap International is the main airport serving the city, and has very good connections worldwide, especially if you're coming from Asia in general. The airport is close to the town too, and you can often save a little on your travel expenses by hiring a 'tuk tuk' to take you into town, which is ideal for couples or single travelers, and are also a great way to get around the town itself. If you're really looking to splurge, you can also hire a helicopter for travel or scenic flights from the airport too, although expect high prices.
