Jeddah Hotels

Sprawling along the shores of the Red Sea, and traditionally the entry point for pilgrimage to Mecca, Jeddah is Saudi Arabia’s commercial hub. From the opulent, contemporary design of the vast shopping malls to the archaic coral houses overlooking the souks in Al-Balad, Jeddah is a beguiling blend of old and new. With vibrant beach resorts towards the north and the remnants of its Old Town in the south, tourists are offered a taste of the eclectic when they come for a stay.

Things to see

The Al-Balad District is towards the south and is a monument to Jeddah’s bygone days as a trading capital of the Middle East. Gaze upon the traditional coral houses, their swirling patterns and crumbling beauty imbuing a strangely mesmerising effect in the midday heat. A highlight is Naseef House, now home to the General Directory for Culture and Tourism and one of the few coral buildings that have been restored. Nearby is the Souq Al-Alawi off Al-Balad Street, a hive of frenzied market stalls piled high with everything from traditional Saudi fabrics to fragrant spices, vegetables, and trinkets. If the souks whet your appetite for shopping, then head to the gargantuan Red Sea Mall towards the northern end of Jeddah – one of the biggest in the Kingdom. And if beaches are what you fancy, it has to be the resorts in the north. With over 30 kilometres of golden coastline and warm, inviting crystal waters, while away sunny afternoons overlooking the endless Red Sea.

Hotels in Jeddah

Luxury hotels in Jeddah are some of the grandest and most opulent in the world. After a heavy day of travelling the city, cool off with a relaxing swim in the outdoor pool, looking out on to the almost purple night sky. Dine on haute cuisine, before hitting the hectic nightclubs of the northern resorts. If you are after something a little more affordable or family-friendly, then you are well catered for, with many mid-priced Jeddah hotels available with air conditioning, satellite TV, and WiFi. Budget options are plentiful, including hotels and hostels, and often offer computer access and breakfast.

Where to stay

The first thing you realise when you get to Jeddah is the immensity of its size, so finding somewhere to base yourself depends wholly on what you have come for. If it’s for long, lazy days by the glorious coastline then there are hotels in every price range along the northern coast around the Az Zahra and Az Shati districts. Culture vultures can head to the centre and south of the city, where you will be within close proximity to the Al-Balad district as well as commutable distance to the glistening beaches.

How to get to Jeddah

The King Abdulaziz International Airport is Saudi Arabia’s main airport and serves millions of pilgrims and tourists each year. Once at the airport, connecting bus services and taxis are readily available to whisk you to Jeddah but be sure to negotiate a price before embarking. If you are going to Jeddah from Cairo or Sudan, then you can also take the ferry which docks at the Jeddah Islamic Seaport.
