Shrewsbury Hotels

The pastel toned cobbled square of this medieval market town sees its fair share of visitors, many drawn to explore the long running history that peppers the narrow, winding streets shadowed by long standing Tudor buildings, others for the bustling and popular market. The glint of the River Severn coils gently around the 660 historically listed buildings that comprise parts of Shrewsbury, along with the pale red fortifications of the town's medieval castle, and the imposing Shrewsbury Abbey.

Things to see

History fans will undoubtedly want to spend a leisurely afternoon wandering the sandstone battlements and vast, airy halls of Shrewsbury Castle. The perfectly kept vivid green of the surrounding castle grounds also make the perfect spot for an indulgent picnic with the family. The other historic site of interest is Shrewsbury Abbey. Dating back to 1084, the rich red brick Abbey shares similar designs to its larger cousin the Castle, with angular battlements atop a large square bell tower – the ideal defence for Norman archers repelling invaders. The peaceful interior offers an ideal place for contemplation and admiration of the impressive stone pillars and glass-work. After the relative solitude of the historic sites, a visit to the town centre and the buzz of The Square, where you can browse the myriad of market wares and take in the intoxicating smells of local foods, is a perfect, vibrant contrast.

Hotels in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury hotels range from historic mid-sized pads and guesthouses to modern budget accommodation. If you're looking for discount hotels, then there are a number of options that will make sure you have more money to spend on the many temptations of the city centre and market. While there are no specialist luxury hotels in Shrewsbury town itself per se, most accommodation will offer little extras like free WiFi in public areas, onsite parking, and a succulent complimentary breakfast to start your day off. If you are looking to splurge, then there's luxury spa accommodation on offer a short distance from the town itself.

Where to stay

If you're visiting on business, then there are a number of discount hotels to be found along the A5 road that borders the town, and provides easy access to the centre itself or the surrounding area. For the full historic experience, you should head to one of the many Tudor style inns in the vicinity of the High Street. You'll also be moments away from the Castle, Abbey, and town centre, which means you can enjoy a few refreshing drinks or exquisite evening meal without having to travel too far. Pleasure seekers can indulge along the Northern section of the Shrewsbury Road.

How to get to Shrewsbury

For international travellers, flying to Birmingham can be the easiest option, as there are direct trains to Shrewsbury available via Birmingham rail links. Travellers from London will need to head to Birmingham to catch connecting trains. Alternately, coach services operate regularly from London to Shrewsbury, and this can sometimes be a more direct option than the train. Once in the town itself, you'll find that Shrewsbury Station is very centrally located, and there are local taxi services and buses to get you to your hotel if you're staying out of town. Walking around the town is the best way to soak up the sights.
