Oberwiesenthal Hotels

In amongst the Ore Mountains, Oberwiesenthal is a winter sports paradise between December and March, with the pistes covered in thick powdery snow, with jumps and half pipes to challenge your skills. In the run up to Christmas this traditional town is particularly popular with tourists, with cosy German markets, candles in all the windows, and horse drawn sleigh rides through the snow. However, it's just as beautiful in the warmer months when the lush green valleys can be hiked or biked, and the balmy evenings can be spent at one of the town's music festivals or cultural events.

Things to see

The Ore Mountains that surround the town have 14 pistes of different abilities, and there's plenty of space to ski or snowboard even in the high season. The town hosts many competitive winter sports, with a luge track, exciting ski jumps, and cross country trails that can be explored when they're not hosting the professionals. This sporty town is always looking for new ways to enjoy their snowy slopes, with snow kites, snow tubing, and even winter biathlons taking place during the busy ski season. When the snow melts you can see the greenery underneath, and the sunshine brings out the wildflowers. This gives visitors plenty of space for hiking, with many trails of different ability levels, and if you go for the harder hikes then you'll be rewarded by the sight of bubbling brooks, wild ravines, and rare plants along the way. Mats are also laid along the trails for tubing, and kids love climbing up high before zooming down the hill on an inflatable tube.

In the cosy wood panelled restaurants, you'll also find cuisine from both areas, with lots of meaty dishes and warm dumplings piled on your plate. Many of the buildings are in typical ski lodge style, giving the town a traditional feel, and there are tall pine trees lining the streets. In the centre of town you'll also find a few useful shops selling ski and outdoor equipment set in the narrow streets.
