Kona Hotels

Stretching for 60 miles along the Big Island’s lava rock-lined western coast, sun kissed Kona is one of Hawaii’s most popular holiday haunts. Offering more than just indulgent levels of sun, sea, and sand however, the district is home to Hawaii’s royal heritage as well its famously good coffee. Kona’s clear and calm waters make it a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, whilst it’s also one of the best places in Hawaii to spot playful dolphins and graceful sea turtles.

Things to see

When most people think of Hawaii, they think of beaches gilded with white gold sand, shimmering teal water, and palm trees gently swaying in the ocean breeze. Not one to disappoint, Kona’s beaches certainly fall under that cliché. A frequent fixture on many Top 10 lists, Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is the Big Island’s largest beach, a favorite for sun worshippers and swimmers alike. Named because of its tendency to disappear when the tide comes in, Magic Sands Beach just south of Kailua Village, is another popular piece of paradise. For snorkelers however, the small sheltered cove at Kahalu’u Beach Park is the best place to glimpse the colorful wonders of the marine world. Contrasting against the black rugged coast with its emerald green lawns, palm trees, and tropical flowers, Waikoloa Beach Golf Course makes for a surreal golfing experience. Home to 2 world-class 18-hole courses, challenging play awaits before the tumbling waves of the Pacific.

Hotels in Kona

From luxury love shacks set in seclusion to full-service family resorts set within floral grounds, the hotels in Kona come suited to every need, taste, and budget. Much of the district’s accommodation sits right along the coast, providing views of the glittering Pacific Ocean. Those with a taste for the finer things can expect every amenity under the sun in the pricier accommodations - treatment spas, lagoon swimming pools, golf courses, and tennis courts are amongst the fabulous features on offer. The mid-range hotels in Kona certainly don’t disappoint either. Well appointed-rooms come with a few deluxe extras, whilst the usual creature comforts and Hawaiian hospitality come as standard.

Where to stay

The historic home of Hawaiian kings, Kailua-Kona is the district’s main hub. A relaxed seaport city and home to some of the best hotels in Kona, here you’ll find every comfort and convenience needed for a kingly seaside stay. From delicious dining haunts along ‘Restaurant Row’ to the boutiques of Keauhou Shopping Center, much of the city’s best offerings can be found on the palm-lined Alil Drive. The Kohala Coast – Waialea area is home to the white-sanded Waialea Beach, and the golf course of the same name. A popular choice for honeymooners and those seeking an indulgent getaway, many of the resorts and amenities come drenched in luxury.

How to get to Kona

Kona International Airport at Keahole, known more simply as just Keahole Airport, is the main gateway of the Kona coast. Whilst it serves a handful of major US cities, including Los Angeles and Denver, those coming from further away may need a connecting flight. Interisland flights can be made from the particularly well linked Honolulu International, Hawaii’s primary airport. Once you’ve landed at Keahole Airport, it’s just a few minutes’ drive to Kailua-Kona. You can either take a taxi, or like many visitors opt to do, you can hire a car. The latter allowing you to explore the island’s more distant attractions at your leisure.
