Salt Lake City Hotels

A spectacular skyline, dwarfed by a dramatic mountainous backdrop, is Salt Lake City’s money shot – and it perfectly encapsulates this city, which blends urban metropolis with high-octane outdoor action. Salt Lake City is the ultimate skier’s city, having hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games across the snow-swamped slopes of the Wasatch Mountains. The Olympics brought huge investment along with them, revitalizing both the resorts and the city in equal measures.

Things to see

The intimidating design of Salt Lake Temple - which towers over the tree-loaded Temple Square, is a spectacular sight. Dwarfing the surrounding museums and restaurants, the temple’s 3, Empire State Building-like, towers rumble during the daily organ recital, and glow hauntingly at night. Around Christmas time, the square takes on an ethereal quality, as each and every tree branch is meticulously strung with twinkling lights. The city has plenty to offer, but it won’t be long before you give in to the urge to head up to Park City Mountain Resort, where you can ski or snowboard on Olympic standard slopes, or rocket through the sky on a daring zip line. Slalom down Deer Valley Ski Resort’s runs to take in panoramic views of the city below. Of course, you can’t come to Salt Lake City without exploring the lake that lends it its name. Float across Salt Lake’s glistening waters to reach Antelope Island, where you can float effortlessly in North America’s version of the Dead Sea, or spot bison grazing while learning how to sail at the marina.

Hotels in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City’s 5 star hotels tend to sit up in the mountains, providing welcomingly warm havens to curl up in after days out tackling the ski slopes. Unwind with a dreamy spa visit, or by relaxing in a misty indoor pool, looking out of floor-to-ceiling windows at the mountain scenery. If all that opulence is a little out of your price range, cheaper hotels in Salt Lake City will give you a comfortable stay without the price tag. With WiFi, hot drink facilities, and flat screen TVs in the rooms, you’ll quickly feel at home.

Where to stay

Some of Salt Lake City’s best hotels are located up at Deer Valley, and if it’s skiing you’re here for, you won’t find many better spots in America. Open fires, cold beers and chargrilled steaks wait in the toasty surroundings of the resort town’s bars and restaurants. Don’t dismiss Downtown Salt Lake City too quickly, however, as you can eat out with ease here, and take in the city’s sights by foot - even the city center’s sidewalks are lined with green grass and leafy trees. Another option is to stay in Downtown Park City, where you can shop for lost treasures in hidden jewelers, or browse through rows of dusty books in quirky old stores.

How to get to Salt Lake City

Landing at Salt Lake City’s international airport is spectacular - as you swoop down over ragged, snow-capped mountains - the airport’s best feature is how close it is to downtown, however. Connected with all major US destinations, as well as Canada, France, and Mexico, you can rent a car at the terminal – or take the shuttle bus - and be downtown in just 10 minutes. If it’s a road trip you want, then the drive from San Francisco is around 10 hours, and you’ll get to cross snow-white planes of salt, which spread as far as the eye can see.
