Find out more about Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana, lying on the eastern bank of the meandering Mississippi River. It is at the head of deepwater navigation on the Mississippi and the city embraces its links with its great river, Modern buildings mix with antebellum architecture and plantation homes. The place was owned by a series of European colonists, France, Britain, and Spain. Its name (French for “red stick”) is said to symbolize the distinctive red cypress tree that grew in the early settlement. Other theories suggest that it comes from blood-smeared poles left by the Native Americans to designate their territory.
