Bursa Hotels

Amongst the freeways and high rise office blocks, Bursa looks like a thoroughly modern city, and it's a thriving centre for business within Turkey. However, there's also a historic side to the city, with its Ottoman and Byzantine days still apparent in the architectural features, and the minarets that poke out behind the new builds. With the perfect blend of traditional and modern, from the bustling bazaars to sleek modern shopping malls, Bursa has something for everyone.

Things to see

The domes and minarets of the Ulu Cami – also known as the Grand Mosque – dominate the skyline of Bursa, and provide an excellent example of early Ottoman architecture. Inside, the walls are decorated with early examples of Islamic calligraphy, with intricate black and gold writing on the walls. Wander around the dimly lit, calm interior, and you'll find spots for prayer and contemplation, with a fountain in the centre for cleansing rituals. You can learn more about the Ottoman Empire and its influence at the Bursa City Museum which is a full of clothes and artifacts from the era, as well as exhibitions that show how the city has changed through the years into a busy industrial centre. If you want some unique souvenirs then the colorful yet bewildering bazaar is the perfect place to shop. With a seeming maze of indoor stalls selling bright silks, decadent jewellery, and piles of tempting baklava, it's easy to find gifts for those back home.

Inside the contemporary structure you'll find designer stores and boutiques, as well as a multiscreen cinema and traditional restaurants sitting alongside western fast food outlets. Heykel is considered the historic centre of Bursa, with buildings created from large limestone blocks, and statues erected to honor the city's heroes. In this area you'll find tree-lined parks with plenty of shade from the hot sun, and will find bazars and market stalls lining many of the streets.

How to get to Bursa

Bursa Yenişehir Airport is about 60 kilometers outside the city and has a small number of domestic flights, as well as services from Dusseldorf. There are buses running from the airport to the city centre on a regular basis, or you can take a taxi which gets you to the centre in just over an hour. Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the major airport for the country, and is 4 hours away by road. However, there are ferries from the Yenikapi area of Istanbul to the Bursa region, with a sailing time of about 95 minutes, and space for both foot and car passengers.
