Ko Lanta Introduction

If you dream of white sandy beaches and warm turquoise seas, then Ko Lanta may well be your island paradise. Just a short ferry ride from Thailand's mainland, the island is mostly undeveloped and has vast stretches of beach that are almost unoccupied, so you can simply sit under a tree and enjoy the peace. The island has a couple of small towns with rustic restaurants and welcoming bars, and there are lots of scuba schools taking tourists out to explore coral reefs just under the ocean's surface.

Where to stay

Lanta Old Town is one of the livelier spots on the island, with narrow streets full of colourful wooden huts turned into souvenir shops. Wander the streets – looking out for the mopeds zipping by – and you'll no doubt be tempted by the rustic seafood restaurants serving the morning's catch. At night, the area is lit by red lanterns and the regular night market is a great place to try spicy local delicacies or pick up colourful handmade necklaces and souvenirs. There is also a handful of bars serving fruity cocktails, with more of a laid-back atmosphere than a party vibe.

Things to see

Mu Ko Lanta National Park covers the south of Ko Lanta, as well as some smaller islands. It comprises white sandy beaches with rocky inlets, colourful coral reefs and caves where you can scuba dive through the clear, warm waters, spotting tropical fish along the way. There are cheap Ko Lanta hotels close to the park offering a peaceful retreat from the modern world. If you like unspoiled beaches then a boat trip to nearby Koh Rok Island gives you the feeling of having your own private island. The journey takes about 2 hours by speedboat and then you are free to walk along the powdery white sands or find a tree-lined beach with just lizards and the occasional sea turtle for company.
