Chiang Mai Hotels

Set high in the mountains of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a colorful and cultural city with golden Buddhist temples and lively marketplaces attracting tourists all year-round. The historic Old City is the site of some of the oldest buildings in Chiang Mai, and you can wander around within its historic walls and see traditional buildings that are hundreds of years old. The city also has a modern side, with world-class restaurants and luxury, modern accommodation for the discerning visitor.

Things to see

The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar makes for an enjoyable stroll on a balmy evening, and there's a laid back atmosphere with colorful stalls lit by fairy lights and busy, narrow pathways full of locals and tourists alike. You'll find stalls piled high with handmade clothing and textiles, shoes, belts, handbags, and jewelry, and there's a leisurely shopping pace with the market often staying open until midnight. There are also lots of temptingly spicy aromas coming from the food vendors, with traditional Thai cuisine served from carts and stalls. The Old City is surrounded by high red brick walls, and Tha Phae Gate has become a tourist attraction in itself. A reconstruction of the 1891 gate, you'll find rows of mopeds and bicycles parked outside, and vendors selling souvenirs to enthusiastic tourists who are visiting the Old City area. Chiang Mai Zoo attracts many visitors who want to see their panda enclosure, with these adorable fluffy creatures on display in their climate controlled environment. There are also giraffes, elephants, rhinos, and other exotic animals on display, as well as a soothing aquarium full of colorful tropical fish.

Where to stay

The Old City area is popular with tourists who want to see traditional architecture, historic buildings, and intricately decorated temples. This area used to be completely walled off until around the 16th century when it was discovered by visiting westerners, and since then it has been developed and opened up, although keeping a lot of its traditional charm. You'll find museums and cultural centers for curious tourists, as well as busy events such as the craft market which brings the area alive with color. The Riverside area is especially busy at night, with bars and restaurants overlooking the Ping River. You can stroll along the area as it's lit by lanterns, and choose between the modern Thai and international cuisine that's on offer in cosmopolitan restaurants.

How to get to Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai International Airport has regular flights arriving from Bangkok, Singapore, and other major Asian cities. The airport is located in the west of the city, just a 10 minute taxi ride from the center, and if you have a driving license in English then you can rent a car, although driving in Thailand can be a culture shock. Many westerners find it easier to find a songteaw outside the terminal, which is a minivan that takes several passengers along set routes, and it's usually fairly easy to find one going to your destination for a low price. Chiang Mai Railway Station also has regular services to Bangkok and other major cities, with overnight journeys available in sleeper cars.
