Sochi Hotels

All eyes were on Sochi in 2014, as the world’s best winter sports athletes scorched into town, showcasing their spectacular skills on some equally stunning ski facilities. Hosting the XXII Winter Olympic Games drew visitors from right across the world to Sochi’s snow-blessed mountains - but don’t be fooled, this city's just as much a summer getaway as it is a specialist in snow. Straddling Europe and Asia, Sochi bathes in a subtropical climate. And when the summer rolls around, the city is one of the few places in Russia where you can recline on a soft, sandy beach, and catch a tan by the waves.

Things to see

The waving palm trees that line Sochi’s seaside promenade feel a world away as you head up to the white-washed world of the Krasnaya Polyana mountains, which stand just 30 miles to the east. As a part of the colossal Caucasus Range, the skiing here is high quality and, having received billions of dollars worth of investments to bring them up to Olympic standard, the resorts invite you to ski in style. Specialising in teeth-grittingly steep descents, and untested off-piste adventures, Sochi is the new kid on the ski world’s block, and you’ll love conquering its mountain terrain for the first time. In summer, the ski lifts will whisk you up above wisps of cloud, to the trails of the Rosa Khutor resort. Breathe in the perfume of rhododendrons, and absorb the views of the Black Sea sparkling in the distance as you walk its well-tended paths. Or, leave the mountains behind, and head into the city to see fearsome piranhas, stroke the sandpaper-rough backs of manta rays, and feed the gaping mouths of colourful carp, at Sochi Discovery World Aquarium.

Hotels in Sochi

The international spotlight has attracted some of the world’s biggest and best 5-star hotels to Sochi’s peaks. This means you can expect luxuries like the feel of Egyptian cotton sheets against your skin, and the tranquillity of deep soaks in baths that have been carved from solid slabs of stone. If you’d rather keep things grounded, low cost options are available, and bright and breezy rooms provide minimal, but effortlessly contemporary, accommodation. Stylish apartment hotels in Sochi let you cook for yourself on gleaming hobs, before relaxing on plush sofas to watch films on flat-screen televisions. Quick WiFI keeps you in the loop wherever you stay, and free ski storage is widely available.

Where to stay

The main Olympic venue, Rosa Khutor, is a highlight. It's ideal for an authentic, off-piste experience, and you’ll spot bearded mountain goats and wide-eyed owls as you weave through the mountain’s thick forestry. Gazprom is another option, and a stay here lets you warm from the cold in the bubbling waters of an indoor water park, before feeling the same butterflies that the athletes must have felt as you peer down the exhilarating gradient of the Olympic ski jump ramp. The Alpika Service resort is Sochi’s oldest, and here you can try out the bobsleigh facility which stretches down the mountain like a coiled snake.

How to get to Sochi

Most visitors get into the region by flying into Sochi International Airport, following a change at a major travel hub like Moscow or Istanbul. Once you’ve touched down, it’ll take around 45 minutes to drive up into the mountains, with free shuttle busses making it easy to get your holiday started swiftly. Taxis will help you to hop around the resorts inexpensively after you’ve reached the mountains, although many will prefer the freedom of having their own hire car.
