Find out more about Cascais

Cascais Introduction

Once a summer playground for royals, Cascais is a vibrant and historic town full of colonial homes and cobbled streets. Cascais is just a short drive from Lisbon and is known for its long stretches of golden beaches, upmarket restaurants and stylish marina. Overlooked by a large stone fortress and full of beautifully preserved historic buildings, it has a traditional Portuguese style.

Hotels in Cascais

Along the coast you'll find many of the luxury hotels in Cascais, which overlook the shimmering Atlantic Ocean. These resort-style hotels have a wide selection of facilities, from outdoor pools to restaurants and gardens. Some Cascais hotel deals include free WiFi, plus a free buffet breakfast each morning, as well as free parking. Away from the seafront you'll find cheap Cascais hotels, which still have 2 or 3-star standards. This includes cosy guesthouses and hotels set in colourful colonial buildings just a short walk from the major historic sites.

Where to stay

The Cascais Coast is a mixture of golden sandy coves and rocky headlands with choppy waters. Take a wander along the seafront, just a short walk from many Cascais hotels, and you'll come across the serene harbour where luxury yachts come to drop anchor. There's a small parade of restaurants and bars with tables overlooking the water, many of which specialise in fresh seafood that has been caught that morning. Central Cascais has a few pedestrianised streets and a town square lined with traditional white buildings with red tile roofs. Wander past cafes with pavement tables and upmarket boutiques to get to the cobbled Old Town. With colourful souvenir shops stuffed to the ceiling with T-shirts and jewellery, the narrow streets are packed with enthusiastic shoppers.

Things to see

Guincho Beach is on the west coast of the town and surrounded by the lush greenery of the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. The scent of pine trees from the nearby woodland lingers on the air and you can choose to relax on the golden sands or surf on the choppy waves. Quieter than the beaches in town, it has dramatic clifftop walks and soft sand dunes to explore. The colourful town of Cascais has long inspired artists, both local and international, and the Centro Cultural de Cascais has an impressive selection of art. Step inside this pink colonial building and you'll find vast white rooms displaying all sorts of art, from traditional oil paintings to challenging modern installations. A popular spot in Cascais reviews is Palacio Cidadela Cascais. Overlooking the marina, this Victorian-era home was the summer residence of royals and has grand rooms full of chandeliers and dramatic gilded interiors.

How to get to Cascais

The main arrival point is Lisbon Portela Airport, from where it's a 40-minute taxi ride to most hotels in Cascais. The airport has flights from across Europe, with an emphasis on budget airlines, and occasional flights from further afield during peak times. An alternative is to take the bus to Algés, then change to take the train to Cascais. There's also Cascais railway station, which has regular services along the coast connecting the town with stops such as the ferry port of Belém.
