Wroclaw Hotels

The tiny bronze statues of Wroclaw’s Dwarves - which have popped up around all of the main sights - will be your guide to this city, which is packed with history, curiosity, and antiquated charm. The comical gnomes are actually hugely symbolic, having first appeared in graffiti form, as a carnivalesque way to show support for the Solidarity movement, which was designed to undermine the Soviet authority. Wroclaw’s location, close to Germany and the Czech Republic – means Wroclaw has seen it all over the years, with the Austrian Hapsburgs, the Prussians and, of course, the Poles all fighting to claim this incredible city as their own.

Things to see

It all starts in The Rynek, which is the city’s central square. Coloured shops sell wheels of smoked Oscypek cheese, restaurants serve bowls of meat - stewed to perfection with cabbages and mushrooms, and fountains sparkle in the sunshine, as they spurt dancing water into the air. Wroclaw Town Hall is the highlight, however, featuring a spectacular, bourgeois Gothic-style exterior, decorated with stunning details like a golden clock, with smiling suns and moons on its time-telling hands. Find yourself in the centre of a battlefield, as a huge canvas - that’s 114 metres long - wraps around the walls of the circular Panorama of Raclawice Museum. The stunning painting vividly brings 1794’s famous battle between the Polish and the Russians to life. Admire the artwork, before heading out to Tumski Bridge, which almost sags under the weight of the padlocks that are clicked onto it by doe-eyed lovers. It’s the perfect place for a slow evening walk, and you can admire the twin towers of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, before feeling a cozy shiver running up your spine, as you spot the city’s lamplighter, illuminating the romantic scene.

Hotels in Wroclaw

You’ll quickly forget you’re staying in one of Poland’s biggest cities, as you settle into your room, which sits over a radiant garden that bubbles with trickling water features. Stay in 5-star luxury to pop the corks off bottles of complimentary champagne, before enjoying beds that mould perfectly to your body. Space age bathrooms add sleek luxury to the city’s stylish options, but even the cheapest hotels in Wroclaw provide plenty of bang for your buck. A reliable WiFi signal will keep you in the loop, and you can choose whether you want an apartment style room - with a full kitchen - or a cosy, environmentally friendly room - where you’ll sleep soundly knowing you’re doing your bit for the planet.

Where to stay

Staying in, or around, Wroclaw’s Old Town is the ideal way to plunge yourself into the heart of this city. Spend hours wandering along its chipped, cobbled streets, swirling canals and paths lined with baby blue houses, before stopping for a tasty Polish honey beer from a local tavern. Don’t be alarmed if you hear the distant roar of a lion, as you wake in one of the Śródmieście district’s hotels. That’ll just be Wroclaw Zoo, where the teeth of striped tigers glint, kangaroos playfully hop, and brown bears lie back on the grass to yawn lazily.

How to get to Wroclaw

The easiest way to get to Wroclaw is to fly to its airport, which is just to the west of the city, and which offers direct connections with cities like Warsaw, Munich, Rome, Dublin and London. Wroclaw is also accessible by train, and it takes around 4 hours to arrive from Warsaw, or 3 hours from Poznan. If you’re coming from further away, trains roll into the city from international destinations like Prague, Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin and Budapest on a regular basis.
